Canada’s education system welcomes about 150,000 international students each year. Covering elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels, education in Canada is governed by each provincial and territorial government.
Elementary school: generally includes grades 1 through 6.
Middle school: usually covers grades 6, 7 and 8, depending on the province.
Secondary school: often called high school, it typically includes grades 9 through 12. In Quebec, high school covers grades 7-11. Types of high schools include public, private, Catholic, Christian, all-girls’, all-boys’ and boarding schools.
Post-secondary: includes career college (vocational school), community college (CEGEP in Quebec), university and grad school.
English as a second language (ESL) programs are offered at middle schools, high schools, colleges, universities and private language schools.
